How to Design Your Home Room by Room — A Beginner's Guide
Starting from scratch with a new home — or finally deciding to do something about a room that's never quite worked — can feel overwhelming. Where do you begin? What do you prioritise? How do you make sure everything feels cohesive without being matchy-matchy?
We've been helping people design their worlds since 2006. Here's the approach we recommend, room by room.
Start With the Hallway
The hallway is the first thing you see when you walk through your front door, and the first impression your home makes on guests. It deserves more attention than it usually gets.
Think about a statement coat hook — functional and beautiful. A small console table gives you somewhere to drop keys and display a vase or a plant. A mirror makes the space feel bigger and lets you check yourself on the way out. And a good floor lamp or wall light sets the tone immediately. Get the hallway right, and the rest of the home feels intentional from the moment you step inside.
The Living Room: Comfort Meets Personality
The living room is where you spend the most time, so it should feel like the truest expression of your taste. Start with the sofa — it's your anchor piece. Everything else works around it.
Layer your lighting (see our lighting guide for detail on this). Add a rug to define the seating area and bring warmth underfoot. Choose a coffee table that works with — not just for — your sofa. Then personalise with accessories: cushions, a throw, books, art, a plant. The living room should feel like it couldn't belong to anyone else.
The Bedroom: Design for Rest
Many people treat the bedroom as an afterthought, but the way a bedroom looks and feels directly affects how well you sleep and how you start your day.
Keep it calm. Choose a bed that has presence — the headboard matters more than most people think. Use soft, layered lighting rather than a single overhead bulb. A table lamp on each bedside table is the minimum. Blackout curtains or blinds are worth every penny. And invest in good bedding — it's both practical and the thing that makes a bedroom feel truly luxurious.
The Kitchen & Dining Area: Make It Worth Gathering In
Kitchens are functional, but they don't have to be purely utilitarian. A pendant light or two above a kitchen island or dining table transforms the space from a place you cook to a place you want to spend time. A beautiful tablecloth, a set of interesting glassware, a ceramic bowl of fruit on the counter — these small touches make the kitchen feel like a place worth gathering in.
For dining rooms or dining areas, the table is the star. Choose chairs that are comfortable enough to sit in for a long dinner. Add a statement pendant above the table. Light some candles. The best dining experiences happen at home.
The Workspace: Design for Focus
Whether you have a dedicated home office or just a corner of a room, the workspace deserves proper thought. Good task lighting is non-negotiable — a quality desk lamp prevents eye strain and makes work feel less like a chore. Organise your desktop with considered accessories. A tidy, well-lit workspace makes you more productive and more creative.
The Final Principle
You don't have to do everything at once. Start with one room. Get it right. Then move to the next. A home that's designed with care and patience will always feel more personal and more beautiful than one assembled in a rush.
